The unbearable lightness of being novel5/23/2023 By 1984 Orwell’s dystopian vision of a world ruled by totalitarian ideologies was seen to have been frighteningly prescient, particularly from the perspective of the eastern bloc countries. Here was an avowedly “postmodern” novel in which the author withheld so many of the things we expect from a work of fiction, such as rounded characters - “It would be senseless for the author to try to convince the reader that his characters once actually lived” - a tangible milieu, a well-paced plot, and in which there are extended passages of straightforward philosophical and political speculation, yet it became a worldwide bestseller, loved by the critics and the public alike.Īs in the case of all immediate and great artistic successes, Kundera’s book must have spoken directly to the contemporary ear. Why had so little remained for me? Is it the result of failing memory, or is there indeed an essential weightlessness to the book? The Unbearable Lightness of Being had a remarkable success when it was published in English in 1984 (this autumn will see an anniversary edition from Faber).

The Daring Twin by Donna Fletcher5/23/2023 Even though the two women really had different personalities, they were very good at portraying each other. The attempts that Fiona and Aliss made to keep Tarr guessing were fantastic. It turns out to be a bigger challenge than Tarr expected. He's not happy over their deception and takes both of them home with him until he can discover which one is Fiona. He doesn't believe that love has anything to do with marriage. He wants a wife who is equal to him in strength and courage. Tarr has chosen Fiona because of her reputation. So they decide that they will play up their twinness and refuses to identify which twin is which. Aliss is equally outraged, even though she has no plans to marry either. She only wants to marry a man she loves and who loves her in return. When their cousin and laird arranges a marriage between Fiona and another laird, she is furious. Fiona and her sister Aliss are identical twins. Good book with a marriage arrangement that doesn't go quite as planned. Wishes kisses and pigs by betsy hearne5/23/2023 But while it shares Hite's spirited folksiness and quirkiness, it lacks Hite's internal logic and consistent tone Hearne's (Listening for Leroy) occasional attempts at seriousness are too pointed and her characters' inspirations somewhat arbitrary. But how? Offering a supporting cast of comical characters, a dash of philosophy and generous dose of surprises, the energetic story calls to mind Sid Hite's farm-family fantasies. Holding herself responsible for the unfortunate transformation, Louise determines to set things right. The next thing she knows, brother Willie is gone soon after, a big white pig with ""sky blue"" eyes like Willie's mysteriously appears. ""Be careful what you wish for"" is the lesson that resounds (a bit too loudly) throughout this offbeat fairy tale set in Tollivers' Hollow, ""said to be a peculiar place, even a perilous place."" Farm girl Louise calls her brother a pig at the exact moment she wishes upon a star. Beatlebone by Kevin Barry5/23/2023 You know: that thing where you’ve got 10 or 15 wonderful books at the side of your bed, and you’re there looking at your iPhone. Our attention flits very quickly from text to text. We’re much more impatient now-I think, primarily, because we’re all online, all the time. Kevin Barry: We’ve changed very much as readers of texts, in recent years. He spoke to me by phone from his home in County Sligo, Ireland. Kevin Barry is author of the collection Dark Lies the Island and the novel City of Bohane, which won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. For Barry, there were numerous challenges in conjuring an icon’s spoken cadence, and his revision process-he reads the work aloud like an actor, and it takes years to get the voices right-is laborious. Artistically frustrated and besieged by fame, Lennon tries to make his way to a private island off the Irish coast, where he hopes to get some peace. What I Learned About Life at My 30th College Reunion Deborah Copakenīeatlebone, Barry’s latest, is a work of speculative historical fiction: The protagonist is a world-weary John Lennon, encountered two years before his untimely death in 1980. Book called a man called ove5/22/2023 The whole novel hinges upon his grief at the death of his wife, but I can’t imagine a charming, pleasant person like Sonja marrying an obnoxious asshole like Ove. There is absolutely nothing likable about him. The problem is that life is so bad with Ove around. In between yelling at people for driving into a no-vehicle area, obsessively checking the neighborhood for burglaries, and shouting about how the world is trying to cheat him, Ove learns to open up to the people in his life and realize that maybe life isn’t so bad after all. Distraught at her loss, Ove attempts on several occasions to commit suicide, only to be interrupted by various neighbors-chief among them a pregnant Iranian named Sarvaneh, who is new to the neighborhood-who need him to fix something for them or drive them somewhere or adopt a cat. The novel follows a grouchy old man called Ove whose cheerful wife Sonja died six months previously. I wrote very in-depth discussion questions for book club that you can check out here. I have absolutely no idea why, and I’ve thought a lot about it. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman is an inexplicable bestseller that receives almost unanimously rave reviews. The probability of miracles5/22/2023 Plus, we just loved Cam's sarcastic sense of humor and her ability to take everything one day at a time. Our favorite part: We loved when Cam's family stops to visit her rambuncious grandmother on their drive up to Maine and Cam finds herself stuck in a tree after Nana abandons her on a late-night adventure. It's inspirational and will make you want to put together your own "Flamingo List". The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to. This book is wonderfully bittersweet, with just as much humor as sadness. Quotes from the book The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder. Cam has no interest in wasting the time she has left waiting for miracles to happen, but slowly the magic of the town softens her and she inadvertantly begins to accomplish all the items on her list of things she hopes to do before she dies. Since traditional Western medicine doesn't seem to be improving her condition, Cam's mom decides they should move to Promise, Maine, a place known for the miraculous events that happen there. 28 October 2021 by Denise Petski Deadline. The gist: Cam has spent the last seven years of her life in and out of hospitals, getting treatment for cancer. Fire in the lake by frances fitzgerald5/22/2023 Reagan, Star Wars and the End of the Cold WarĪLL RIGHTS RESERVED. History Schoolbooks in the Twentieth CenturyĪ Journey Through Contemporary American Cultures The Vietnamese and the Americans in Vietnam With a clarity and insight unrivaled by any author before it or since, Frances FitzGerald illustrates how America utterly and tragically misinterpreted the realities of Vietnam. Originally published in 1972, Fire in the Lake was the first history of Vietnam written by an American and won the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the National Book Award. This magisterial work, based on Frances FitzGerald's many years of research and travels, takes us inside the history of Vietnam - the traditional, ancestor-worshiping villages, the conflicts between Communists and anti-Communists, Catholics and Buddhists, generals and monks, the disruption created by French colonialism, and America's ill-fated intervention - and reveals the country as seen through Vietnamese eyes. Frances FitzGerald's landmark history of Vietnam and the Vietnam War, "a compassionate and penetrating account of the collision of two societies that remain untranslatable to one another." ( New York Times Book Review) The fictional character of Alice lives a posh lifestyle in the mid- to late 1800s in London, England. Her hair, which is as yellow and blonde as corn, is usually down, showing her curls. She's shown as ghostly pale, like many other English people. She also wears white tights with Mary Jane Shoes. She usually wears a childish blue Victorian dress. 30.3 Hallmark 1999 Alice in Wonderland TV MovieĪlice is a very lovely, pretty, and beautiful young girl with shoulder-length blonde hair and striking blue eyes. 30.1 Greg Hildebrant & Disney Illustrations.28 Alice in the Country of the Heart~Wonderful Wonder World~.21 Hallmarks Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 1999.20 Alice through the Looking Glass 1998.19 Hello Kitty & friends in Wonderland 1980s.15 Alice in Wonderland-Hanna Barbera special.13 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 1966 Avant-garde version.12 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972).8 Alice in Wonderland-The Circa (1900's) Silent Film.4 Alice's Adventures Through the Looking Glass & What She Found There. She is also prominent in most expansions of the "Wonderland" myths. This book has two or three storylines converging at the end. A tried and true godlike device (Heracles, Jason, Odysseus, etc.) and always makes for an interesting read. The god/goddess who backs the winner gets Atlantis all to themselves to play with. In classic Greek mythos fashion, the gods and goddesses get bored and decide to fu… err… screw around with the denizens of Atlantis by testing them to see which species is the best. This entry is “Survivor-meets-paranormal-romance-story”. But I almost have to be dragged to the altar, so to speak. Once I’m there, I really enjoy the story. I have enjoyed these books, but have found them to be consistently “slow starters.” It takes me about 50 or more pages to really get into their groove. It’s an interesting premise with some “out there” concepts”. This means nymphs, vampires (really?), centaurs, dragons, etc., are all living, loving, and fighting together in their own little world. The ones who were considered failures were sequestered in Atlantis and sunk to the bottom of the sea. Its premise is that several paranormal species were created by the gods in their quest to create man. The pecan log roll remains our signature product. But now, in my 50's and being blessed with the incredible opportunity to revive my grandfather's company, Stuckey's, I answer proudly when the occasional person asks me that question that "Yes, I am!" "Aren't you that pecan log roll lady," a man asked me in line at a coffee shop the other day? If you'd asked me that in my 20's, I would've rolled my eyes and been embarrassed at such a reference. |
